“I came to the country at age six, and I immediately went to a Montessori school, actually, which was remarkable because my family was penniless, and they sent me to a private school at that time. I benefited from the Montessori education which in some ways gives the students a lot more freedoms to do things at their own pace, to discover.  Interestingly my partner Larry Page also went to Montessori for preschool and kindergarten; that’s something we share in common. I do think that some of the credit for the willingness to go on your own interests — you can tie that back to that Montessori education.”

Sergey Brin Talks About Montessori

“I remember that at the Montessori school we had an Apple II, and when I was 9 years old, my parents gave me a C64, which was pretty fun. I do think that at the time the ability to program your computer was much more accessible than it is today.   It may not have been as powerful or sophisticated, but at least computers came with built in BASIC interpreters, for example, and you could right away start writing your own programs.  Today there are significantly larger barriers, simply because of the complexity that’s been introduced into computing. So I don’t think that kids starting out with computers today get as welcome of an entry to programming as I did.”
