Review: Walk It Out! by Konami
March 8th, 2010 posted by buckleit

Want to go for a walk? Well designed and addictive, this low impact walking simulator turns your Wii into an endless treadmill, complete with scenery, record keeping and a virtual coach. Your walking motion is captured with either the Wii Remote, the Wii Balance Board, or a vinyl dance pad; none of which are included in the $30 price. Because there are one or two player options, we were able to dig up two mats previously used with Dance Dance Revolution (DDR), plug them in, and start striding.
The key to getting a good score is to match your feet to the beat. It’s like a very simple version of DDR, because you can walk anywhere on the pad to have your step recorded. But it does have to be in rhythm, and you can’t stop, unless you want your counter to stop as well. The more you walk, the more parts of the environment become unlocked. There are some very clever touches to the game that make the walking speed by. You can change the time of the day, or search for hidden items as you walk, using the direction keys to look around. When you see another computer controlled person walking, they’ll stop and wave. In addition to the walking, there are three games, and 100 popular songs, from artists like Ne-Yo (Closer), Fergie (Clumsy) and Demi Lovato (How Do You Sleep).
As you walk, you see your on-screen avatar moving through virtual fields, parks, ocean sides, suburbs and other metropolitan areas. As you step to the beat, the world around you evolves and expands in real-time. You can choose to go straight or make a turn and “follow the road less traveled”, unlocking in-game items, songs and bonuses.
Progress is tracked, showing you exactly how many calories you’ve burned, your distance traveled, and number of steps taken. Note that some of the music contains some potentially offensive lyrics; hence the ESRB 10+ rating. There is no other worrisome content. Our testers, both young, old and visually disabled, were able to find success with this game. Teaches: fitness, rhythm, walking, music, physical education. Konami Digital Entertainment Inc.. www.konami.com, $30. Best for ages 8-up.
